I don't think basing your opinion of JavaScript as a programming language based on your experience with the browser API is a good idea. JavaScript has evolved a lot in recent years (especially since ECMAScript 2015). While it's true that JavaScript was originally built for browsers, it's also true that Java was originally built for set-top boxes. Yet, I don't see people complaining about that.
