I thought LaTeX was supposed to allow you to focus on the writing.
Prelude: I have been using LaTeX very seriously for about 5 years now. To simplify typesetting, I have written up my own document class that is essentially a culmination of 4 years of package hunting and options-setting. Today, I just load it and set document class options for whatever I need (or not), and start writing. One single document class and I can do everything from typeset a two-column report with TikZ, minted, and biber/biblatex references, to typesetting an exam with circled, randomised MCQ options, with solutions selectively compiled.

Why don't people use LaTeX?
I first started using LaTeX nearly 4 years ago. It took me that long to set up this document class that compiles all the commands I use, and I still make changes to it occasionally.

Will knowing LaTeX come in handy later?
Right now I am writing an assignment in LaTEX. Look at this beauty, https://github.com/HarisIqbal88/PlotNeuralNet

latexindent.pl - Perl script to add indentation (leading horizontal space) to LaTeX files. It can modify line breaks before, during and after code blocks; it can perform text wrapping and paragraph line break removal. It can also perform string-based and regex-based substitutions/replacements. The script is customisable through its YAML interface.
