Good enough to make apps but not good enough to contribute to open source?
Lucky for you, I am extracting the core components of my backend application and will be publishing it for users to build complete enterprise Android applications quickly. It will be finished in a few months. Here's a link to the current GitHub repo.

You can still mix and match APIs at will with EE. This is what you do on Tomcat mostly, but also with Piranha Cloud (https://piranha.cloud), and to a degree even with Open Liberty.
