Technically, yes, though I don't think there's much support for it. What's wrong with just using an app to display images like shotwell or photos?

It looks like we're getting close! | 6.0 Odin Public Beta / Release
I don't want to spoil your fun, but one of the things in this project is Mail 2.0 MVP which wasn't updated for a month. Personally I can't wait to have a stable native email client, but I don't think we're that close to 6 release.
