I don't use the built-in one, I use an extension called Settings Sync.

I haven’t used VS Code so I don’t know, but I wonder if Joyride with Clojure gives you the functionality of evaluating code and change the environment interactively https://github.com/BetterThanTomorrow/joyride

This is why we created Joyride, which lets you script VS Code in user space. Not only that, it gives you a REPL letting you control VS Code and modify your script as they are running.
