I use this source of nvim-cmp for Neovim's Lua API (https://github.com/hrsh7th/cmp-nvim-lua), but it only shows completion item in neovim.

Run external commands in background
You can take a look at my camp-rg plugin. That is relatively simple, and runs ripgrep in the background with timeout and canceling from lua.
