How the heck do Vim colors chemes work
If you go the route of creating your own color scheme I'd suggest taking a look at https://github.com/chuling/ci_dark. It's relatively simple colorscheme and the way it is written makes it pretty easy understand but also build on top of.

Wow I think I finally find someone with the same aesthetic taste as me. It is a custom colorscheme directly buitin in my config and is originally inspired by the falcon colorscheme, everything is hard-coded though, since I'm not planning to turn it into a plugin. You can take the code and modify it as you like.
