Java 4X game available as open-source
Well, you might not be aware but Swing supports hardware acceleration: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/2d/flags.html I had to add it in my project to make it really fast.

But of course, when you see the game that somehow visually worse than 1993 original, have a micromanagement issues, according to seasoned veterans (This cuts down the amount of micromanagement needed drastically. ), adding to it a showrunner, who's evading some easy questions about the game itself not really helps, true.
