Should one set the color scheme of the shell or the terminal emulator?
I do that by using named colors for fish, like this theme: https://github.com/caksoylar/dotfiles/blob/main/fish/themes/termcolors.theme However this is not the way most fish themes are set up, e.g. if you use fish_config.

Vim beginner here, need some setup/plugin tips
For tabbed windows, you could use bufferline to config Neovim. Besides, tree sitter, nvimlsp-config and mason.nvim are also highly recommended. I share my personal dotfiles-nvim if you would like to take a look.
