Twitter is still a good and viable alternative but probably you need to invest a good amount of time and energy to curate your timeline and your following list.

Super rich features. Within each feed, the ability to filter by many things. Eg, list, users, hashtags, tweet type (include/exclude retweets, replies, polls, etc), minimum retweets/replies/likes -- actually any search command. For each list, you can switch between "recent" mode and "top" mode. I generally display both.
