You can also use this https://github.com/esp8266/arduino-esp8266fs-plugin to push a SPIFFS image which can be accessed from the code after uploaded

You mention uploading the sketch, but don't say anything about uploading the filesystem. So, I'm guessing you didn't. The easiest way is to use the Arduino ESP8266 filesystem uploader.
