Noad Player has an option to hide Whatsapp Audio and audio files shorter than a minute, but it can't exclude custom folders. The app has a persistent notification as long as it's open whether you're playing some music or not. Starts sorting from the last song in the album.

What is your favorite app that doesn't have a good open source alternative?
harmonoid , harmonoid GitHub. It is similar to a native music app and able to play local music files but also is able to stream from youtube music (it is under the option called stream) and has synced lyrics. Also available on desktop.

Music App for Linux?
Harmonoid This one is both a regular music player for local files and it has a Youtube Music Search/Playlist. It is basically everything in the paid Youtube Music Premium....for free. You can also get the android app with FDroid if you add extra repos to Fdroid. Highly recommend this one.

I personally recommend Harmonoid - not sure if it works on Auto, but it's a very solid app. It's also on Desktop.
