    I don't quite get the dislike of TiKZ. It seems to be to be a fairly sensible, powerful, approach to diagrams in LaTeX. Possibly the worst thing is its monolithic documentation as one vast PDF file. But there is help for beginners out there too, such as here. I myself use a little glossary/help file which I keep as an org file in Emacs, so if I forget how to do something, I can just check that file.
