After luring customers with low prices, Amazon stuffs Fire TVs with ads
My wife and I bought a Fire TV for a particular use case:
- The hot tub room in the winter
- The outdoor patio in the summer
It was so cheap, we don't mind the ads on the home screen. If it dies from the moisture, we'll just buy another one.
Meanwhile, the big LG OLED we bought, I have been on a crusade to neuter all the ads without causing issues with downloading apps/updates/streaming. The RootMyTV exploit no longer works:
https://github.com/RootMyTV/RootMyTV.github.io
I have found blocking the IP of the local Akamai peer works for blocking some ads and the OS update check, but at the cost of other things which also use the CDN. It seems to use internal DNS, which complicates things.

First WLED project. WIP
It is not hard at all. All you need to do is to open this: https://rootmy.tv/ in browser on your LG TV and to drag the slider on that web page. If your TV is exploitable, it will be rooted. If it isn't exploitable, you have no luck. But please first read carefully their github, just to inform your self: https://github.com/RootMyTV/RootMyTV.github.io

Does anyone have instructons/detail for blocking ads on LG tvs/webOS?
https://github.com/RootMyTV/RootMyTV.github.io allows to installation of https://github.com/webosbrew/webos-homebrew-channel but your TV may have been patched by LG already and RootMyTv won't work.

A thread for negative aspects of LG OLED.
WebOS security issues : An exploit pops up every once in a while as seen in these examples : 1 2 3. If you are not planning to use the "smart" features you can mitigate most by blocking internet access of TV from your router. However there are things you cant mitigate, such as tv pinging everyone it can in bluetooth range with no way to shut it off.

Tv backlights
One thing, IMPORTANT: System partitions are write protected, you cannot edit them. There are some folders are not write protected, /home/root ; /media/developer ; /tmp ; probably something else, but this is what I know. Don't try to edit system partitions (write protected ones). Even if you could remount them in rw mode, they are digitally signed by LG and you will brick your TV for sure if you mess with them. If you want to change some resource on system, you will use overlayer (mount --bind). If you are comfy with Linux, you can get really good info here: https://www.webosbrew.org/pages/filesystem-overlays.html and here: https://github.com/RootMyTV/RootMyTV.github.io/issues/102

kindly help. i have webos tv and i need to use vpn to use any streaming services, is there a tick or a method to install vpn or use it on LG TVs
I don’t think so. There’s rootmy.tv for up to last years firmware and I believe this one which I’m not sure about. I remember dev mode needing to be refreshed about once a month or so. There may be another git that I’m missing, but afaik there’s no vpn client in the repos. It may be possible to compile one or install a precompiled one, but I haven’t looked into it.

Watching Crunchyroll on LG TV via Chromecast?
Solution 2: if you don’t have an iphone, you can download the developer tools from the lg app store and follow a tutorial which will allow you to install the crunchyroll app for 999 hours (there’s a tool called LG developer manager (https://github.com/webosbrew/dev-manager-desktop) which requires no rooting of the device and it’s pretty much 3 steps to follow.
