If that's 1998 then you'll have a heart attack when you take a peek at my I.T end of degree project's PHP source code. I agree with the prints, it was pretty annoying to read and I also prefer using HEREDOC (before I joined my company the source code of its software used unformated prints and inline IF, I had to turn them into HEREDOC whenever I worked on a file or else it would hinder my development time).

Some go for lighter things. https://thephpleague.com/ once you get their router and container running you probably have everything you need. Simple query builders that are usually also helpful (eg. https://github.com/skipperbent/pecee-pixie and https://github.com/TCB13/sequel-mongo-php) for most projects.
