Why do people have these add-ons? Isnβt it a huge invasion of privacy?
PreMiD (that exact add-on) user here. The program works like this: Firstly, you download a third party app that stays in the background tracking your browser. It only shows websites you yourself went and searched for on the Presence Store and enabled in the settings, though. After that, Discord detects the task's Rich Presence data and displays it in your Game Activity.

Hi, I'm a hobby developer and I recently made a PreMiD (extension for several browsers) Presence which links to your Discord account using Rich Presence and shows what you're watching on KAA and more! You can check it out on the PreMiD store and add it to your extension very easily.
This is actually something completely different (an extension called PreMiD which basically TLDR; has a store full of "Presences" that users can just add in to their extension and toggle etc). It's extremely customisable and easy to use as well as support hundreds of websites and people can add many websites as well. The extension you're talking about is most likely completely unrelated, you can find PreMiD Presences @ https://premid.app/store and source code is on https://github.com/PreMiD/Presences/

gRPC for file upload service
It can be done. Here is an example of client/server implementation in JS. Just keep in mind that gRPC limits message size with 4MB, so if you exceed that, clients must manage their chunks.
-
gRPC is suitable to handle file uploads?
Yes, it perfectly suitable. You have to use gRPC streams and divide your data to chunks accordingly. Here is a basic project I did to try gRPC file uploads.
