If you are well-versed in programming then you might wanna take a look at PHPCompatibility. It will scan your codebase at different PHP version rulesets to point out code that needs upgrading. You will be needing PHPCS for this.

How do you ensure your plugin is compatible with most themes? Does it come down to just testing a bunch of themes?
If you want to go a step further, follow the WP VIP Coding Standards, WP VIP is Wordpress/Automattic's high-profile/enterprise level hosting. Only plugins that adhere to high coding standards are generally allowed to be used there (from experience).
