Guys, it's the 001 edition
This is the kinda console you'd just salvage for parts or to make an OpenTendo. In the same way you might buy a junky C64 in the hopes that you can salvage working SID or CIA.

I'd love a few things! I need a beat to hell NES that I can guilt-free scavenge the CPU and PPU from so I can build my own NES fron scratch using the OpenTendo project.

Emulation: is it enough in video game preservation?
I think PCBs themselves are easier. There's a few projects that recreate the PCB for the NES, but require you to transfer working chips from a real NES. It's getting the actual chips that's harder to manufacture in smaller quantities. Definetly helps preserve the working actual consoles.

Hypothetically, would it be possible for a company to clone the GBA and leave it unchanged design-wise with outer parts compatibility, except with say, the internals having much more efficient power usage on its components?
It should be possible. There is something like this for the NES in the form of the OpenTendo. However since some of the components are no longer in production you'd need to salvage them from original hardware as of now. That being said there are people actually recreating old hardware like furrtek does for the NeoGeo.
