Fire Starter??
AppStarter, the relaunched version of FireStarter, still works but you can't boot directly into and it hasn't been updated in > 7 yrs. I use KODI w/o installing any 3rd party repos installed (i.e. my "unknown sources" is disabled) so for me AppStarter provides a very fast, easy way to update to the latest KODI release. I sometimes still use it to launch or manage other apps but not as often as when it was first released. Plus it has always been an open source app so maybe someone will fork the source code some day and improve it.

SideQuest App Launcher
In the mean time, SideQuest app launcher is a crude port of the open source app "App Starter" - https://github.com/sphinx02/AppStarter which you might be able to get working. I hope that helps!
