Converting text to outlines is giving a strange result. The resulting shapes look too complicated with strange overlaps. Over the years, I haven’t seen this behavior until now. What’s happening?
Thank you. This is helpful info. Not super related, but I will add that back in 2017, Monserrat was subtly redrawn with different weights. https://github.com/JulietaUla/Montserrat/releases/tag/v7.200

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate that exact font file in my search. However, I do remember that variation of Montserrat existing at some point. Here is the original GitHub source, and you may be able to ask the creators there: https://github.com/JulietaUla/Montserrat

Is there any way to use font features in Emacs?
a bit of a workaround that I have been using I found on this blog post. Essentially, they use this tool https://github.com/twardoch/fonttools-opentype-feature-freezer to enable font variants by default. Though I'm not certain if it works with ligatures.
- OpenType Feature Freezer With OpenType Feature Freezer, you can “freeze” some OpenType features into a font. These features are then “on by default”.
