Start page?
I wrote a custom homepage (https://github.com/jmarmorato/Intranet-Home-Page) that the family and I use. We have links to everything internal and external that we use regularly, and some other information like calendars, weather, and news. As far as DNS goes, I used a .net so I don't have the browser issues you do (your browser isn't recognizing a .home as a TLD, so it's just trying to search it instead of navigate to it. If you try http(s)://selfhosted.home, that should work as you are basically forcing the browser to not search (unless there's a URL syntax issue.

Whats a good home page replacement to have widgets or bookmarks to my apps as well as a news feed option?
Unfortunately I don't think there really is a good option? Someone on this subreddit was making one and even released it, but since it only has 2 commits I wouldn't rely on it being maintained, and the install instructions might be a bit much from your post https://github.com/jmarmorato/Intranet-Home-Page . Still, it might be worth looking into since I think it comes the closest to what you want.

Heimdall alternatives
I’ve tried used homepage, heimdall, homarr but always came back to Fenrus it’s just easy to setup and create multiple dashboards for different user groups.

https://github.com/revenz/Fenrus Fenrus is upgraded version of Heimdall. Still configured via UI and supports enchanced apps but has grouping, accounts, allows to add bookmarks (like, links to something external).
