How do you guys build a decent looking base?
Building Gadgets: this is by far the one of my most useful, versatile building tool created by DireWolf20. There are many tools in this mod and it it really intuitive to use once you understand it. You can build wall, floors, horizontal/vertical columns; copy structures and paste them somewhere else; exchange blocks and so much more. You simply have to have the blocks in your inventory or in a storage and set the gadgets to use the blocks from that storage

help with building gadgets
The wiki for building gadgets has a lot of info and there are plenty tutorial videos available on youtube showing how they work. Only thing that’s different in VH is the crafting recipes. U can always make a creative world to play around with it and test things.

What are some of the things you hate about modded MC?
It is not a direct solution, but it sounds like you need some kind of backpack mod, somewhere to keep tools and materials that you need to keep handy but not right in your face. I'm not familiar with Create: Astral, but if it doesn't have a backpack mod already then you can probably just drop one in. Sophisticated Backpacks is a good one, but of course there are other choices.

Memory leak on server (backpack mod?)
I had that exact concern and reported it (because i know how the backpacks work). It was declared as an non issue and a "manual fix" was provided. https://github.com/P3pp3rF1y/SophisticatedBackpacks/issues/413
