here's Botania which is written in the multiloader-template style.

Orechid entries are specified using recipe files https://github.com/VazkiiMods/Botania/tree/1.19.x/Xplat/src/generated/resources/data/botania/recipes/orechid where you also include the weight

If you look at this example it shows changing the particle texture with age, which could give you the "lighter shade as the trail goes on" effect you're after.
