Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Can I use Mastodon as the backend for the social features in my app?
Proprietary clients for activitypub servers; including Mastodon are totally kosher ( see Ivory ). And there are other activitypub servers some of which have more permissive licensing (MIT or BSD).

Man Behind Mastodon Built It for This Moment
My biggest concern is that adoption of/interest in Mastodon will mute development of other (higher performant) projects based on ActivityPub. Would be nice to see something based on Go or Rust gaining popularity:

Mastodon is not a good social network
Yes there are a variety of implementations - perhaps you were searching "Mastodon" (the name of a single implementation) instead of "ActivityPub" (the name of the protocol)?

Alternative implementations of mastodon?
A more useful response would include links like https://github.com/BasixKOR/awesome-activitypub with a comment on which ones are most viable.

Need a 100% free app
A fork of an already existing activitypub project that would implement dating site features should be the way to go IMO. The infrastructure is already there. Would just need a bit of tweaking. The main advantage is that the "site" would be hosted on a bunch of different servers completely independent of each other. Thus costs and moderation policy would be decentralized.
- Any good alternatives?
- Are there any social networking platforms/services that focus not on posting content/likes, but rather on user interaction, communication, building communities?
