Finally got an edge lighting setup that does what I want. Looks a lot more distracting on video but in person it's pretty amazing.
Info about the setup is here. I didn't make this, just one of the few people who have built one.

Do not buy a Hisense TV (or at least keep them offline)
Apparently the same issue has been reported with Philips TV [1] and Fritz!Box [2] as well.
