There is a nice pair of configs in the AB9IL GitHub repos. One is a super light no-plugins setup and the other has plugins for Telescope, Treesitter, and some languages.

Which operating system are you running, as that may be a factor? FWIW, here is the nvim config I use for light programming. One minimal and another with just a few plugins.

What's the difference between setting key-mappings in a plugin's config spec vs a keymaps.lua file?
I actually do this intentionally (not in init.lua but in my mini.align setup) because the plugin doesn't have a "convenience feature" for setting the keymap in visual selection mode.
