How to get started building an 8088 computer?
Or do you mean designing a PCB from scratch, having it manufactured, soldering all the chips in, etc.? If so, you could take a look at the schematics and datasheets in this project.

I ordered and received a Homebrew 8088 system. I've got a case and power supply for it, now I just need to find an 8bit ISA VGA adapter and order a PS/2 USB adapter.
Completed kits are sold on their eBay page (link on their GitHub).

Ideas to challenge my linux college students.
My teacher used gameShell for us, which I thought was a good tool even though I personally knew what it was about. Not really a thing to do one task at a time though.
