Project mention: Thoughts, learnings and regrets after three years on Home Assistant | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-02-12I have HACS[0] installed in my Docker image, I use it for exactly one integration and the initial setup seemed a little dodgy but it's been pain-free for a couple of years now.

I finally gave up trying to use the mini hacks to make RTSP work reliably. I ended up using Wyze Bridge [0] instead, and it has been far more stable. Using Frigate for the web UI. It doesn't make for a local-only solution, but I don't use my cameras to record anything that would bother me if other people saw it.

I recently discovered the home-assistant supervisor [0] repository. It's awesome to see such a well-designed, mature, and actively maintained open-source python application. I've found that there's no shortage of high quality python libraries and frameworks to learn from, but open-source applications aren't as common. I love coming across repos like this so I can study their design.

I use Home Assistant for doing most of what you're asking for. This integration works great for adjusting light level and temperature: https://github.com/basnijholt/adaptive-lighting.
My home has an ERV and I use a couple Shelly relays (one for power and the other to boost airflow) integrated into HA to modulate the amount of fresh air I bring in, currently based on indoor/outdoor temperature and humidity. I don't have an air quality sensor, but if I had one I could easily integrate that into my automations.

Project mention: Connect Midea Dehumidifier to WiFi without using the App? | /r/homeautomation | 2023-06-01Gotcha. Have you tried this integration for local control? Regardless of what you use, I believe you do have to use the Midea app to get it initially connected to your WiFi. (I went with the dongle + ESPHome route, so can't offer much first-hand experience here.) There's a long thread over in the HA forums that might offer some more insight if you haven't gone through it already.
Which is likely what is happening here. The LG "ThinQ" washing machines do allow for remote starts: https://github.com/ollo69/ha-smartthinq-sensors/issues/234
> After 10 minutes (IIRC) in remote start mode without starting the machine goes to sleep. You must use the smartthinq_sensors.wake_up command to wake it up, then the remote_start command to start it.
Project mention: Home Assistant blocked from integrating with Garage Door opener API | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-11-08> https://github.com/make-all/tuya-local
Just a small warning: make sure to check whether your device needs to be added to the Tuya cloud to get a local API key. I was only able to get "my" lamp working locally after registering it via the app and creating a developer account.
Another option can be flashing it with Tasmota: https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Tuya-Convert/
Project mention: Monitoring energy usage with smart plugs, Prometheus and Grafana | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-05-05Homeassistant + Power calc (https://github.com/bramstroker/homeassistant-powercalc) really does wonder here,
you can "simulate" power of fairly stable appliances.
Then you chart that in a nice Sankey chart or in standard charts and enjoy
