Sidekiq VS good_job

Rollbar is a great error-tracking service. It alerts us on exceptions and errors, provides analysis tools and dashboard, so we can see, reproduce, and fix bugs quickly when something went wrong. This service has a possibility to log not only uncaught exceptions but any messages. By default, the messages are reported synchronously, but you can enable asynchronous reporting using Sidekiq, girl_friday, or Resque. Also, you can provide your own handler and a failover handler to be confident, that your error is tracked and delivered in the case of primary handler’s fail.

I'd say Sidekiq is the top competitor here.

There's something wrong at Redislabs, it took them over a year to get RESP3 rolled out into their hosted service, you'd expect a rollout of that to be a bit quicker when they're the owner of Redis.

It affected us when upgrading Sidekiq to version 7, which dropped support for older Redis, and their Envoy proxy setup didn't support HELLO and RESP3: https://github.com/sidekiq/sidekiq/issues/5594

That depends on how the `maxmemory-policy` is configured, and queue systems based on Redis will tell you not to allow eviction. https://github.com/sidekiq/sidekiq/wiki/Using-Redis#memory (it even logs a warnings if it detects your Redis is misconfigured IIRC).

Sidekiq https://sidekiq.org/: This one started as an open source project, once it got enough traction, the developer made a premium version of it, and makes money by selling licenses to businesses.

Sidekiq will drop in-progress jobs when a worker crashes. Sidekiq Pro can recover those jobs but with a large delay. Sidekiq is excellent overall but it’s not suitable for processing critical jobs with a low latency guarantee.

I think it's worked out well for Sidekiq (https://sidekiq.org). I really like their model of layering valuable features between the OSS / Pro / Enterprise licenses.

I was studying Sidekiq's page on rate limiters. The first type of rate limiting mentioned is the concurrent limiter: only n tasks are allowed to run at any point in time. Note that this is independent of time units (e.g. per second), or how long they take to run. The only limitation is the number of concurrent tasks/requests.

This is the most direct competitor of good_job in my opinion.

Once we are done with default gems, should we look into something we usually use? That's jwt because we need session tokens for our API. Next comes our one and only sidekiq. For a long period of time it was the best in town solution for background jobs. Now we could also consider solid_queue or good_job. In development and testing groups we need rspec-rails, factory_bot_rails and ffaker. Dealing with money? Start doing it properly from the beginning! Do not forget to install money-rails. Once everything is added to the Gemfile do not forget to trigger bundle install.

In the world of Ruby, GoodJob [0] has been doing a _good job_ so far.

Had it in production for about a quarter and it’s worked well.

Idk about pgagent but any table is a resilient queue with the multiple locks available in pg along with some SELECT pg_advisory_lock or SELECT FOR UPDATE queries, and/or LISTEN/NOTIFY.

Several bg job libs are built around native locking functionality

The suggestion from /u/tofus is a good one. If you are already using redis as your ActionCable adapter I would use sidekiq. If not and you're using postgres I would consider https://github.com/bensheldon/good_job

Probably worth mentioning that aside from delayed_job there are at least two more modern alternatives backed by the DB: Que and good_job.

Good article. Sidekiq is a good, well respected too. However if you are starting out I would recommend not using it, and instead choosing a DB based queue system. We have great success with que, but there are others like good_job.

Sidekiq Pro is great, we're paying for it! 10k a year I think.

But for people who are interested in alternatives, I'd also suggest Good Job (runs on Postgresql).

That's heavily inspired by Rail's Action Cable (websockets) Adapter for Postgres, which is a bit simpler and easier to understand:

Briefly, it spins up a background thread with a dedicated database connection and doings a blocking Postgres LISTEN query returns results, and then it forwards the result to other subscribing objects.
