Top 23 Sprite Open-Source Projects

  1. material-design-icons

Material Design icons by Google (Material Symbols)

    Project mention: MiniMax-M1 open-weight, large-scale hybrid-attention reasoning model | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-06-17

    1. No it's not. Top GitHub repository from Google as an example: https://github.com/google/material-design-icons I think you'd actually be hard pressed to find a single repository where the company that owns it lists where they are registered.

    2. This is a requirement for companies registered in the UK. You should also read your own link, it doesn't say anything about the company's presence on 3rd party websites.

    3. This is such a remote reason it's laughable.

You just want them to mention it because it's a Chinese company. If they were American, Mexican, German or Zimbabwean you wouldn't give the slightest fuck.

  2. InfluxDB

  4. Pixelorama

Unleash your creativity with Pixelorama, a powerful and accessible open-source pixel art multitool. Whether you want to create sprites, tiles, animations, or just express yourself in the language of pixel art, this software will realize your pixel-perfect dreams with a vast toolbox of features. Available on Windows, Linux, macOS and the Web!

Project mention: I built a pixel art editor after playing Octopath Traveler II | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-05-01

Gave it a quick try and liked it so far. Of course it's still quite basic but a good start I'd say. Looking forward to seeing more features being added.

To anyone looking for a more feature packed pixel art editor, I highly recommend https://github.com/Orama-Interactive/Pixelorama which is free and made with Godot. I recently switch to Pixelorama coming from Aseprite because imo the development for the latter got a bit stale over the years while Pixelorama really seems to have a lot of momentum and community behind it. Also, Pixelorama being made with Godot is something I really love to see!

  5. LibreSprite

Animated sprite editor & pixel art tool -- Fork of the last GPLv2 commit of Aseprite

Project mention: Making Video Games (Without an Engine) in 2025 | news.ycombinator.com | 2025-05-20

In the end of the post Noel mentions Aseprite, but he might be interested in Libresprite as well? https://libresprite.github.io/
