gping is a souped-up version of the traditional ping utility that graphs network latency for multiple hosts as well as execution time for commands, with the option of custom colors. Our thanks for the suggestion go to fudgecakekistan.

  • nmap

    https://github.com/nmap/nmap/issues/635

This looks like a reasonable mitigation for the lack of native JSON output.

  • Project mention: How does Linux NAT a ping? | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-09-10

Nod, I remember it not being as effective/easy to hide as exfiltration over UDP/DNS too, as there was always less background noise to hide in. That said, I found this with a quick search - https://github.com/utoni/ptunnel-ng for those who still want to do it. A number of hotels and captive portals still let ping’s through even if they play tricks with UDP/TCP.

Any significant data over ICMP will always stick out though if anyone is doing analysis. Which isn’t often, frankly, in situations like I described, but…

  • Project mention: Tools for measuring Network convergence, delay and packet loss | /r/networking | 2023-04-28

IRTT (Isochronous Round-Trip Time) is an open-source network performance testing tool that specializes in measuring latency, jitter, and packet loss. It is designed for both unidirectional and bidirectional traffic, supporting multiple protocols such as UDP, TCP, and ICMP. IRTT's standout feature is its ability to generate isochronous (constant interval) packet streams, which allows for precise control over packet timing and transmission rates. This capability enables users to simulate various network conditions and stress test network devices, making IRTT a versatile tool for network administrators and researchers.
