There in an open source program for Linux/Windows, called Caprine, it's on GitHub ( https://github.com/sindresorhus/caprine ). It has also a portable version for Windows on https://portapps.io , if you are on a machine that's managed by the company you work for (it's like that for me). It's like the official Messenger app for the desktop, but Messenger came out later.

For any kind of basic text and code editing I use CotEditor. It's free, has useful functions and syntax highlighting for almost anything. It's more lightweight than Atom/Brackets.io and thus way faster.

Mac app that shows all open files, directories, sockets, pipes and devices in use by all running processes. Nice GUI for lsof.
Not seeing anyone here mentioning the application Sloth. It shows all running processes and which files it's using. If you select a specific volume at the top, you can see what's keeping you from ejecting that volume and you can even kill the process from there. Works great because I have photo libraries on an external disk and photolibraryd always keeps it busy.

i have never used this software so i cant be sure if it good moonlight it does seem like it was made for game streaming all though i dont see why it couldnt be used for streaming movies
