Project mention: Cosmic Desktop: Hammering Out New Cosmic Features | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-18What level are you interested in scripting? In KDE Plasma you can interact with the desktop UI via JS: https://develop.kde.org/docs/plasma/scripting/
And then for something more sophisticated there are extensions like https://github.com/Bismuth-Forge/bismuth.
It does all feel a little disorganized/wild-west-y compared to say, a .vimrc with a list of plugins and bindings, which is something that makes a system like Nix (or a fully containerized DE of some kind) appealing
That's exactly what happens. Bismuth was a fork of Krohnkite. If someone needs Bismuth enough, they will pick it up, fork it or whatever.
I tested several setup in the past using approaches like Andronix and this setup is better in many ways:
KWin used to have no tiling capabilities at all and people came up with lots of add-on scripts like kwin-tiling, Grid-Tiling-KWin, Krohnkite, Bismuth and so on. This gave users tiling, but it was always a bit hackish, getting KWin to do something it wasn't designed to do.
so I picked EOS, with KDE Plasma because I found something called Konsave and they said KDE Plasma is the most customized DE, so I'm sold.
Project mention: 5 years ago Valve released Proton forever changing Linux gaming | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-21I run winesapOS[0] which is based on SteamOS and was able to repurpose an old Toshiba notebook for my kids, running Freddy Fish* and other games. Windows 10 doesn't run smoothly (even though it came with Windows 10) and I'm not going to run anything older than that.
* Yes, ScummVM is available for Linux but the Steam Linux distribution included an old ScummVM which wasn't able to load some libraries. Running the Windows version through an compatibility layer was easier than modifying shell files to run the latest ScummVM through flatpak.

Project mention: Is there a way to transfer KDE Plasma settings from one laptop to another? | /r/kde | 2023-05-22Currently mainly through copying the configuration files, which are in a big heap under ~/.config (a list is at https://github.com/shalva97/kde-configuration-files)
This is a fork of bismuth that works with plasma 6. Haven't tried it, but it is supposedly quite nice

Unfortunately until we find more volunteers in this area, it is hard to see status quo changing. See also https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/issues/607 and this ongoing project https://github.com/pjones/plasma-manager
heres some useful information: i use i3wm, my distro is linux mint, my gtk theme is the one from here, my gpu is a geforce 210 (yes, i know, really old)
Project mention: KDE Plasma macOS-like window decoration (highly customizable, non-aurorae, fixes rounded corners bug) | /r/kde | 2023-12-06Throughout my journey using Catppuccin as my main system color scheme in KDE Plasma, I've found it weirdly hard to find a Window Decoration theme that had the macOS-like buttons, like the official window decoration from Catppuccin KDE, but without the famous KDE corner bug for rounded corners, where (if you have Blur on) the blur will not respect the rounded corners and "leak out". A detail that really upsets me and that happens with the Catppuccin KDE window decoration and all Aurorae-based window decorations, for that matter. So, after finally finding a decent window decoration theme that solves this issue and works well with the latest version of Plasma, I went out and made a fork that changes its default colors so it fits the Catppuccin Color Scheme! I called it BreezeEnhancedCatppuccin.
