Project mention: I use the default file browser in vim (netrw). I know there are plugins that a lot of people like. Should I switch? | /r/vim | 2023-06-29I personally use nerdtree. Add nerdtree-git-plugin too, that's nice when looking at your project (for files, use vim-gitgutter).
If you want a file full browser experience choose nnn: https://github.com/jarun/nnn . If you have a desktop file for Helix you can use the Gnome Files program to make all your programming language files open in Helix.
Came to post zoxide. Also if you use `ranger`[1] (vim inspired file manager) then you might like to add the `ranger-zoxide` plugin[2].

As of now I've solved it by using Tiny File Manager and a simple slider JS-script (bx-slider) together with some php to get the images and it works OK. But it doesn't look as clean as I want it to, the client needs to rename the files to change the order of the images in the sliders loop (since the slider is loading the files in alphabetical order). Also Tiny File Manager gets stuck in Imunify360 (and probably in similar security tools as well) and I need to white list it for every installation/client that needs it which is not ideal.
As something of an old-timer here, there's some amusement, but mostly appreciation that people are discovering that these very old ways of doing things have a lot of potential (and a lot of untapped ideas)
Somewhat relatedly, recently I discovered the colorfully named fff. It's a solid file manager, but what I've used it for is a terminal based filespace navigator (by adding a function that just leaves you in the place you navigated to).
It's funny how it's hard to break the habit of "cd" to move around, despite this being way faster, especially if you're not sure where you're going.

Project mention: The case of the jump into the middle of an instruction from nowhere (2023) | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-24Well yeah, I mean no one forces you to use Explorer for file management under Windows. I'm an old-time Norton Commander user, and when Windows came around I switched to Total Commander. There are open-source alternatives too, even cross-platform ones, like this one: https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/.
That being said, no one forces you to use Windows either - except maybe your employer or the software you are using, but this is getting less and less of a problem fortunately (web apps, ).
