Project mention: (USA, midwest) Home Assistant NFC Tag Reader cases - John Oliver | /r/3Dprintmything | 2023-09-15John Oliver is seeking 3 cases to be printed for these tag readers: https://github.com/adonno/tagreader
Seconding this. I was able to just run it with docker compose on a cheap mini PC and it chugs away happily, interfacing with all manner of devices (Phillips/Lifx/IKEA/Airpurifier/Bunnings brands). Only gets tricky to set up devices when you're dealing with some hostile cloud based gadget that doesn't want to play nice.
Unbelievable it can all be controlled offline using Siri on an iPhone, or other voice assistants.
It can even display your electricity consumption by counting the LED pulses on your smart electricity meter that fires every 1000th of a kw/h, only takes a cheap ESP32 and a photodiode: https://github.com/klaasnicolaas/home-assistant-glow
Such a wonderful project.
Another option for multiple circuits
Project mention: I'm a security technician. I found out where all our Pis are going. Access control panel I'm working on: | /r/raspberry_pi | 2023-06-20The sensors themselves are relatively easy to defeat, a strong enough magnet in the right position and you can pop a door or window open without tripping the sensor. This specific DSC panel was chosen as the bus protocol was unencrypted(the only reasonable attack would be a playback attack, everything needs a user, master, or installer code), but it would be relatively easy to add an esp8266 behind the wall plate of a keypad. (take notes, this is why you should have motion detectors wired inside, and add latching tamper zones). I don't have to worry about the encryption issue, since the keybus line doesn't go outside of a locked closet, which will probably use the latching tamper preset.
DIY Plug in: this Github Project describes a way to diy a plug in connection running on ESPhome for a few $ of parts, but I'm a bit of a novice and don't know how I would connect this to Homekit.
Project mention: I was wrong to ignore Zigbee and Z-Wave. They're the best part of my smart home | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-02-12
If you have some Pthyon experience, you should be able to use something like TinyTuya to pull DP data from your Tuya devices. Alternatively, you can use Tuya-Cloudcutter to flash a local-only firmware like ESPHome/LibreTiny or OpenBeken which have much easier integration options (local open API, HTTP, MQTT, etc).
Project mention: Media cabinet ventilation with NF-A12x25 or NF-A12x15 (static pressure factor and limited space for exhaust) | /r/Noctua | 2023-07-01
Project mention: Connect Midea Dehumidifier to WiFi without using the App? | /r/homeautomation | 2023-06-01Have you replaced the Wifi module with an ESP8266 dongle, or just trying to use the stock one? This and this are usually the go-to options.
Project mention: What We Learned Making a Plastic Injection Mold with a Chinese Mold Maker | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-10-08Yes, I've got my DIY one working with Home Assistant. It is just running on an ESP32 so you can load a configuration to it via ESPHome [1].
