Project mention: Discord to Start Showing Ads for Gamers to Boost Revenue | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-01> Tell me another platform that is free, has realtime chat, voice and video, has stable service, allows sharing images and other media, with good ownership management... and is open source.
Mattermost: https://mattermost.com/
Rocket.Chat: https://www.rocket.chat/
Nextcloud Talk: https://nextcloud.com/talk/
Self hosting and some assembly required. I've run all of them on cheap VPSes to explore a Slack/Discord replacement, neither was mindblowing but all of them seemed okay (Nextcloud's offering was rather barebones, though).
Audio and video support varies because getting those right is challenging, at best you'd just integrate with something like Jitsi, that one's actually pretty good for meetings and such: https://jitsi.org/ and has a cloud version too: https://meet.jit.si/ (yet people still go for Zoom and it's odd UI/UX choices)
I actually rather liked forums back in the day, but I guess nobody will be setting up that many phpBB instances in the current year, though projects like Discourse also seem promising: https://www.discourse.org/
I don't think many people at all will be leaving Discord, due to how entrenched the platform is (network effect): if you want people to help you with what you're working on, you go where they are, not vice versa.
Project mention: Happy 20th Anniversary, Gmail. I'm Sorry I'm Leaving You | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-15It really is hard to leave Gmail when all of your data has been conveniently stored therein. This is one of Google's retention strategies and it is indeed brilliant.
That said, there's a vast number of self-hosted alternatives like Stalwart Mail (email) [1], Immich (images) [2], NextCloud (Google Docs) [3], etc.
Project mention: Elegant open source project tracking, Trello like but self-hosted | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-03-18I switched to Planka after Focalboard went community-supported, but failed to appoint any community leaders. So far, I'm very happy with Planka for my needs at home.

Project mention: Ask HN: Any good open source video conferencing options? | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-02Came across [Jitsi](https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet-electron/releases/tag/v2023.7.2) and [BigBlueButton](https://github.com/bigbluebutton/bigbluebutton), does anyone have experience of running these or others in production?

In my frustration with MS Office, I gave it a chance and searched for MS Office alternatives ... and found https://github.com/cryptpad/cryptpad ! Looks quite nice. Maybe I should set that up on a server.
Nice and simple. I feel the only lacking feature for a basic blog is having unlisted blog posts, which is very handy when you want to share it to proof-readers. This can be done on google doc/hedgedoc [0] for sure, but then when porting there are very often typos creeping in.
Project mention: FluidFramework: Build distributed, real-time collaborative web applications | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-11
Project mention: Ask HN: Why hasn't OnlyOffice see higher adoption than LibreOffice? | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-02-24Had never even heard of it.
And their website doesn't help at all - https://www.onlyoffice.com/ - At first, I thought it is selling some kind of add-on for Businesses to use with Microsoft Office. Then I clicked "Get it now" and saw a page that gives me options to download a Docker Image, or Cloud Images or VM Images. What the heck? Then I see the "GET OnlyOffice" link in the navigation menu and go to it - the menu pop-up talks about DocSpace, Enterprise, Workspace etc. etc. and asks to sign-in for cloud. Again, what the heck?? Then I go to the PRODUCT link that also pop-ups lot of options - like - Doc editors to integrate into your business platform .... ??? Then I see the "Desktop and Mobile Apps" option in it and click 'For Desktop'. And finally, here I found what I had been searching for - Get free desktop office suite for document editing and collaboration ( https://www.onlyoffice.com/desktop.aspx ).
When a website is designed to be "Enterprisey" - only targetting and catering to a particular audience, and totally ignores everyone else - I am not surprised it's userbase is limited.
