Project mention: My incredibly thoughtful girlfriend went through the trouble of searching for your subreddit, seeking advice, and then bought me a steam deck. Thank you all, it was the perfect birthday gift, and I was flabbergasted. | /r/SteamDeck | 2023-05-11Congrats u/qualx and belated Happy Birthday! I've had my Steam Deck for a year now and super happy with it ! Also, I recommend checking out this guide it's super helpful. :) https://github.com/mikeroyal/Steam-Deck-Guide
Congratulations for buying a NON-PC that's IN-capable of playing games on its own except these games https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_macOS_ARM_games. You paid top dollars for a crippled machine, all thanks to Apple. Any ARM user "Must" use one of the PC Emulators told in https://github.com/mikeroyal/Apple-Silicon-Guide which is usually Rosetta (default by Apple) for you so that you can play ANY game you see but NOT in its native speed but in Emulated (slower but not much) speed.
Just played games on Linux for the first time. It's way easier than I originally thought since Proton is integrated into Steam client. Can even run non-Steam games through Steam client but had to use protontricks to add dependencies like Visual C++ redistributables.
Project mention: Can someone explain Lutris in extreme layman terms cause I can't get my head around it | /r/linux_gaming | 2023-12-10Lutris is a launcher for applications that run on Linux, that's the most comprehensive answer. It is highly configurable and supports scripting. Probably the most common use is launching non-steam Windows games with Wine and DXVK/VKD3D (I recommend a tool called ProtonUp-Qt for managing versions of this software). However, it can be configured to launch just about anything, including native Linux executables etc. Many popular titles will have scripts that automate the installation and setup, making them plug and play (if the script is good, that is). But everything the script does can be done manually too.
Project mention: 5 years ago Valve released Proton forever changing Linux gaming | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-21I run winesapOS[0] which is based on SteamOS and was able to repurpose an old Toshiba notebook for my kids, running Freddy Fish* and other games. Windows 10 doesn't run smoothly (even though it came with Windows 10) and I'm not going to run anything older than that.
* Yes, ScummVM is available for Linux but the Steam Linux distribution included an old ScummVM which wasn't able to load some libraries. Running the Windows version through an compatibility layer was easier than modifying shell files to run the latest ScummVM through flatpak.
