Project mention: Password-stealing Linux malware served for 3 years and no one noticed | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-09-12This is installed by adding a shady repository to your apt sources.list...
How is this a supply chain attack? My official debian repository have never been breached so far.
This is no different from downloading an .exe of a shady website and running it.
Also: https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=download+manager... lists:
• uget: https://sourceforge.net/projects/urlget/
• kget: https://apps.kde.org/en-gb/kget/

why use "Free Download Manager"? Is this targeting new-comers from windows?
Project mention: Windows feature that resets system clocks based on random data is wreaking havoc | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-17Unless you need the newest features, Photoshop runs surprisingly well under Wine - and I don't mean this in the usual "oh yea, Wine totally works" way where it's a huge pain to set up and is 90% luck, it actually runs with barely more glitches than on Windows (not zero, but it's Adobe software, so you can't expect much).
This is the installer I used to use: https://github.com/Gictorbit/photoshopCClinux
This one is newer and looks even more promising: https://github.com/LinSoftWin/Photoshop-CC2022-Linux
Windows uses some weird install process where it needs two partitions for the install media. Basically the whole installation is too big for FAT32 so IIRC the way to have it work is to split the ISO in two having the bootable part on one partition and a lot of the installation content on another.

recently i went looking for a (slightly more featureful) mspaint.exe replacement for linux and found https://maoschanz.github.io/drawing/ to be serviceable.
There is gdm settings https://github.com/gdm-settings/gdm-settings I have not used it a lot, so no idea if it can do what you are asking for.
On Windows I like GCC + WSL the most. Language version doesn't matter much, really. As for learning resources, there is the Stallman book and the Beej guide. Never followed through them but have heard good things about them, and the authors are more than qualified.
