  • Project mention: Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-11-30

    https://github.com/refined-github/refined-github

I never intended it to be a side project, I just liked the extension and started contributing heavily to it, to the point where I became the maintainer for the next several years.

I get about that amount per month in GitHub Sponsorships. Not nearly worth the amount of time I put into it, but it’s relatively effortless work. It makes my regular work on other GitHub projects more enjoyable (due to the features that Refined GitHub adds)

  • SingleFile

Web Extension for saving a faithful copy of a complete web page in a single HTML file

  • Project mention: How SingleFile Transformed My Obsidian Workflow | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-26

That's interesting. I have been saving articles as PDF files, which is browser-independent, but useful just for search and reference, a nuisance to quote/copy-and-paste.

If I search only the computer, I don't get results from EBay and Amazon at the top. The idea of keeping the knowledge base separate from the primary notes is a good idea. In my case, that knowledge base is the file system, and the primary notes are whatever I choose.

When I was using Evernote, the inbox was the knowledge base and notebooks were the focus. I just had too many different potential projects going on to manage this well.

    Looking to focus.

    I'll revisit Firefox and SingleFile.

    🧩 The Browser Extension Framework

  • Project mention: Show HN: Bedframe – open-source Browser Extension Development framework | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-09-05

Ooof!! It is an... interesting time right now in extensions land. The switch from MV2 to MV3 is a bit chaotic but hopefully tools like this (Bedframe) and tools like [Plasmo](https://github.com/PlasmoHQ/plasmo) start to inject some freshness in the space.

  • buster

Captcha solver extension for humans, available for Chrome, Edge and Firefox

  • Project mention: AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-17

The captcha buster extension[^0] along with the service on you computer to move the mouse for you works very very well. It uses google’s TTS (afaik) to transcribe the audio captcha. It’s google verifying another google service works well. I find it very satisfying to not provide my labor to train googles computer vision corpus but instead have the snake bite it’s own tail.

Anyway, I highly recommend buster, I barely notice captchas anymore with it.

  • RSSHub-Radar

🧡 Browser extension that simplifies finding and subscribing RSS and RSSHub

  • Project mention: Show HN: Extract RSS feed from almost anything | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-09-03

This is a good application. However, I think that among similar products, https://github.com/DIYgod/RSSHub is a more usable choice(able to generate RSS). In addition, using rsshub with the https://github.com/DIYgod/RSSHub-Radar browser extension would be more convenient.

  • stylus

Stylus - Userstyles Manager (by openstyles)

  • Project mention: Nepal bans TikTok and says it disrupts social harmony | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-11-14

I used a Firefox add-on called "Stylus" and wrote a custom css rule to hide the relevant divs/elements. It's not perfect, but it's okay. https://github.com/openstyles/stylus

However, after the recent ad-blocker targeting by Youtube I pretty much just stopped watching. I added my regular subscriptions to the NewPipe app on my phone and just watch what they put out.

The add-on I mentioned above is super useful to personalize my experience with other websites. Particularly online-shopping and other marketplaces that have huge amounts of whitespace for no reason. You'd be surprised how much nicer the web experience is after you add a few "margin: 0px;" css styles to strategic areas.
