So XMRig is truly open source and safe to use on our primary computer?
https://github.com/xmrig/xmrig#donations
It's not a "trap" at all. It's documented behavior:
The project page is quite clear:

Solar powered monero mining datacenter
All you need is to set up a Monero wallet (using the official CLI/GUI, or Monerujo, or Cake Wallet) and then configure xmrig.
- My xmrig "uploads" over 25gb+ in a couple hours? Is this normal?

Nicehash For Linux Or Alternative That Works On
What GPU? I have a 3070 in my desktop and a 3070+RX 570 4GB in the garage, running Windows inside to try out the newish QuickMiner and NHOS in the garage, I'm considering setting up both 3070's in the garage when my risers arrive and moving the RX570 back inside and just running the Linux versions of nbminer (for GPU) and xmrig (for CPU) using systemd unit files... the trick will be staying on top of any URL or port changes.

I heat my home by mining crypto currencies
Nicehash (the app) is just a convenience tool to manage miner executables. You can connect most miners to Nicehash (the service), and some are open-source.
For instance I GPU mine with https://github.com/ethereum-mining/ethminer (no longer active, but works well for me) and CPU mine with https://github.com/xmrig/xmrig , both built from source.

Just started mining monero with my 10980xe on NiceHash, is this hashrate ok?
Miner: https://github.com/xmrig/xmrig (this should go without saying but RandomX algo is CPU only, don't bother GPU mine)
