Going with docker might be easier, because there's x11docker. You'll need to write a Dockerfile that installs dependencies and builds your application, which might seem daunting at first, but is very useful for a developer to have a reproducible build process, and that's what it provides.

You can run desktop GUI apps via an X socket - https://github.com/mviereck/x11docker is an implementation to make that easier. You won't find many images out of the box that will have a GUI - it very quickly comes to odds with some of the core value propositions of containerisation (i.e. how do you scale a GUI app by adding containers?).

That said, would there be any benefit of keeping the x11 session in a separate pod vs adding that container to the same pod (such as x11docker*)?

Putting Ubuntu on mine, but plan on trying other distro's in docker using x11docker. Fun times ahead!

I've been looking for something like this. So far I've looked into x11docker (https://github.com/mviereck/x11docker) and dx11 (https://gitlab.com/brickpop/dx11-nim#dx11) but dx11 looks unmaintained and the whole solution feels incomplete. Yes, I know it's not LXD, but I was willing to accept docker as an alternative.

This seems really interesting. A somewhat related project is x11docker[0] which attempts to make it easier to run gui applications through docker.

It works pretty well with docker, though I've not used it since I switched to podman as there wasn't any support for it at the time. I've not tried recently.

It does seem this project is at a dead end based on the recent development activity in recent months.

If you are hesitant to allow X server access to a container, an interesting project to explore is x11docker. The gist of that project is to run a second X server with its own authentication cookies. Docker containers get access to the new X server and are segregated from display :0 on the host. This would prevent them from accessing your main display, although I am not sure how it affects the keyboard, mouse, and clipboard. Head over to that project and ask!
