I'm building a Python Browser and need you help running agents on conformance tests https://github.com/byteface/chromonic/

    cd to tests/layout..

    git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/web-platform-tests/wpt.git

tell it to run the tests and fix any issues with layout and append any issues with domonic into the PLAN.md

I'm targetting the CSS2 folder atm.. so you can tell it to switch to any folder within there for now.

    Thanks,

    > what test cases do you consider for making something like this? how do you determine if you have handled all the outliers or not?

The ~2 million Web Platform Tests https://github.com/web-platform-tests/wpt. They also handle most of the backwards compatibility. The rest is engine developers manually comparing against each other's engines.

    - is all the code written in c++ or is it rust these days?

There's still a lot of C++, but new code is increasingly Rust. To what degree varies by engine: Servo (and Blitz) are almost entirely Rust. Ladybird was 100% C++ in February, but is now 25% Rust. Firefox has significant and actively developed core components in Rust, but isn't actively converting more core modules. Chromium doesn't have any core components in Rust yet, but has invested heavily in converting foundational dependencies like FreeType and HarfBuzz to Rust. Safari is the outlier, I believe it doesn't use any Rust yet.

    - how many people in a team do you need and how long would it take to write a browser engine from scratch

I've heard estimates that Chrome has a team of >1000, Firefox 500-800, Safari 100-200, Servo / Ladybird are more like 5-10. I've been building Blitz by myself for ~3 years. Something like 3-5 years is probably a minimum if you're truly building from scratch unless you have a really large team backing it, and depending on your success criteria.

    - how is mobile vs desktop handled at the browser engine code level?

There are actually surprisingly few differences beyond touch input and screen size handling.

    2 projects | dev.to | 10 Aug 2026
Kitesurf reflects that distinction. It uses pieces of the modular Blitz HTML/CSS rendering engine, runs its components in isolated Workers, and exposes enough of the Chrome DevTools Protocol for compatible automation tools. Cloudflare reported that it already passed more than 215,000 tests from the Web Platform Tests project, then added integration and visual-regression tests against real sites because standards conformance alone could not prove the whole job.

  • Firefox is the best mobile browser

    > As long as you pass Apple's arbitrary rules, you can make your own browser for iOS. Ladybug uses Apple's test suite as an arbitrary measure of completeness.

The browser is called Ladybird and it isn’t Apple’s test suite, web-platform-tests is a collective effort all the major players contribute to. Almost two thousand people have contributed to it:

  • WebShield – A new wide-spectrum content blocker for Safari

Blink forked from Webkit more than a decade ago. There are tests that try to measure their compatibility, like https://wpt.fyi/results/?label=experimental&label=master&ali... (part of https://web-platform-tests.org/). They also have different JS engines these days (V8 vs JSCore).

That said, as a frontend dev, I very very rarely run into real world issues between Safari and Chrome. More often it's Firefox/Gecko that lags behind, usually in some sort of graphics optimization (SVG and canvas stuff). Also some differences in WebGL and webgpu support, but those are niche enough that it's not a big deal yet.
