Unity’s New Pricing: A Wake-Up Call on the Importance of Open Source in Gaming
It's not as monolithic as you'd think. There are lots of engines out there but their communities aren't very vocal compared to Unity, Unreal, and especially Godot's community.
Take a look at: https://itch.io/game-development/engines/most-projects
And
https://www.gamedeveloper.com/blogs/the-generous-space-of-al...
If you look at both of these you'll see just how many engines there are and neither of these cover everything. There are plenty of engines popular in the Python community that no one outside of it are aware of. Such as Arcade [0], Python-Tcod [1], Ursina [2], UPBGE [3], and Panda3D [4]. But based on your description you'd really like https://gdevelop.io/. It embraces exactly what you're describing where you can build a game but just installing entire features others have made and put online into your game.

[2] Beginner friendly 3D engine (built on Panda3D): https://www.ursinaengine.org/

open source and libre software
(Godot)[https://godotengine.org/] is FOSS and it does a much better job at being a game engine. To me it makes sense that Blender removed the game engine part. It was outdated, lacked features and didn't belong in a 3D animation software. (UPBGE)[https://upbge.org/] is a project that continues Blender's game engine if you really want to use that. It uses eevee as rendering engine for better graphics.

Searching for Game Engine
Maybe UPBGE? Not sure how good is it, but looks good for me.

I have created a simple game in blender. I now want to take it to another level by adding custom python code to the game. Where do I test out the code
please note that blender has officially stepped away from being a game engine, https://upbge.org is the recommended replacement if you want to stay in blender, it's a blender fork that maintains the game engine.

Kids don't need tools for kids
There are plenty of "game maker" software. Even open source ones.
Check out Godot, which has tutorials for creating a game: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/getting_started/first...
There is also the Blender Game Engine, which got split from Blender, but has a visual logic editor: https://upbge.org/#/documentation/docs/latest/manual/manual/...
