Unifi Protect (Remote Access disabled)
It feels like a means to drive people to their cloud solution, and I really don't want to go that route myself. Digging through my history I found the patch I mentioned: https://github.com/rick51231/unifi-protect-android-direct. It sounds like it doesn't work anymore, and imo I wouldn't run random stuff anyway... but it seems to corroborate that this is a limitation imposed by unifi.
