I think your title and your description may already show a little problem: You say you're lookin for a GA alternative, but what if GA was never the right tool for your use case, to begin with? Your use case description is pretty minimal:

    > "I would like to see visitor numbers at times of day and probably a few more things in the future."

GA is a very complex tool, that often is complete overkill for small sites. So when you ask for GA alternatives, you will probably hear Matomo as a suggestion – but this also is in the same area of complexity as GA and would probably not be a good fit for your project (and it wouldn't solve your cookie problem without proper configuration).

So maybe a better question would be "What analytics tool should I use for project XYZ?"

If you want a minimal approach, take a look at Umami (, which is about as minimal as it gets (when talking about frontend JS analytics tools).

I'm basically a user who had pushed out of my view Google Analytics, to use Open Source solutions (that's the base) such as Matomo (formerly Piwik), and then I tested Umami, very easy to use and lighter. ✨

Yes I don’t like Docker for the same reason. I had it running on my VPS only with an instance of umami and 512MB of RAM and I wasnt able to update the container, I was searching why and I found that the RAM was not sufficient and the update was crashing… only for one light container. In the end I had upgrade the VPS to 1GB (few euro on DigitalOcean) and I added a Snowflake Proxy with the daily report (just because the unused resources, at Le I’m helping someone), but Docker is very heavy, also the logs, the network throttling, etc… is all “centralized” inside it. I don’t like this way, to me looks like “the software isn’t in my hand”. Or like a VPN without WireGuard, that yes, it’s absolutely useful but what an heavy software!

like it! i am deciding between self hosting or plausible. Ideally there would exists a simple sqlite backed lightweight analytics tool with event tracking and certain flow related analysis tools (e.g. what percentage of users who visited page X fullfilled event Y?)

  • Add Umami Analytics to a Web Application
    4 projects | | 19 Nov 2022
Google Analytics is a fantastic tool to know your traffic but it’s better for non-developer people to add analytics. Umami is a self-hosted web analytics solution that is open-source and privacy-focused. You can customize the database and hosting as per your need. The feature that impresses me is that with one click you can get a shareable link to the analytics for sharing. That’s why Hashnode uses Umami to provide article analytics to users. A solid reason to at least give it a try.

Throwing in another vote for umami! It's a breeze to set up as others have stated and I have all my websites reporting back to it for analytics. My standout features being the fact that it's realtime, and bypassed adblockers with just a bit of setup.
