  • Is there a Linux alternative for XTU or Throttlestop?
And before you start screaming about intel-undervolt, I want to overclock and overvolt, so none of those suggestions will work. neither will throttled from erpalma.
  • Will the T480 suffice for the next 4-5 years? | 2021-09-30
T480 will run linux well, but you need this:
  • Ryzen Power Profile Daemon
ryzen-ppd was inspired by throttled for Intel CPUs and helps controlling power and thermal limits on AMD Ryzen Mobile processors.
  • The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've ever used | 2021-09-21
A few things. The newer TrackPoint caps are not good. I actually had to order some 3D printed one from some Japanese guy. Also my Thinkpad T14 is throttling to the extent that I had to install tools [1] (?) that fix this problem. Battery seems to be bad as well.

  • T480s or X1C6? | 2021-09-20
I generally tune my machines to optimize performance, and fortunately on linux I can use this If I was on windows I could use throttlestop, regardless I have managed to generally avoid any real throttling on it even under heavy sustained load. The real question is does he want to be maxed out at 16gb of RAM. For me the answer was a resounding no.
  • ThinkPad T495 Poor Battery Life on Fedora 34 | 2021-09-18
Well you can check to see if it is running by running systemctl status tlp. This will at least let you know if it is getting blocked by something. Some of it may be AMD Ryzen specific issues. You can take a look at and try using this to at least adjust tdp on battery, if tlp is not doing it. I would also look at zenstates-linux. I only have desktop AMD systems at this time, primarily because I knew support on mobile would lag, adn I won't be in the market for a new laptop for at least anothe rtwo years. Another item that may be causing issues is Secure Boot, since a lot of this may require msr writes which are not allowed when Secure Boot is active. So try turning it off and see if tlp kicks in. It is particularly vexing with thinkpads since the ec controller keeps forcing it to use the BIOS settings. I have a T480s and have to use (intel specific, but it does delve into how Lenovo makes things a little difficult, a good read).
  • TLP on T480, best settings? | 2021-09-02
Stock out the box tlp is usually pretty good to go. You need . Give it a try the undervolting alone should save you some serious juice.
  • T480, any other upgrade? | 2021-08-21
Also, there is throttling problem on t480. Check this project
  • Trying out the X1C Gen 9 | 2021-07-11
Here is a Linux tool that can fix some ThinkPad thermal throttling problems.
  • Are there cooling/throttling issues with the 9th gen X1 carbon? | 2021-07-06
Hi all, I have an 8th gen X1 carbon and I've run into a pretty irritating issue where all cores are limited to 400 MHz with any load (e.g. hangouts in Chrome), bringing everything to a crawl. I'm using Arch Linux and throttled "fixes" the issue in that I can use my computer but the entire keyboard gets super hot and I can burn myself touching the case underneath the screen.
  • What should I do with my T470p? Overheating problems... | 2021-06-22
  • 5.11 Kernel seems to have made a huge difference for me | 2021-06-19
I have used the 5.11 (installed via the program Ukuu) and it worked well on my machines, except for one machine that needed throttleFix (and using the latter on 5.11 caused log spam). At present I use 5.8 on my machines (but both machines are laptops with Intel graphics).
  • T480 Overactive Fan & Hot Temperatures [Solved] | 2021-06-15
The fan on my T480 (running Linux Mint) felt completely overactive. I have TLP installed, also thinkfan, but neither seemed to have much impact on the fan. Frustrated, I used some compressed air to blow out the vents, but also discovered this:
  • Lenovo Thinkpad L490 fan 0 rpm
Maybe that can help others too :)
  • T480 Temperature Sensors under Fedora | 2021-06-09
The T480, however does suffer from a firmware bug that causes a lot of throttling in Linux. See here.
