Although jsonette might be considered more complex Tanka is a great alternative for k8s config management.

The YAML Document from Hell
At Grafana Labs we're using jsonnet at scale, while being a powerful functional language it is also excellent for rendering JSON/YAML config. We have developed Tanka[0] to work with Kubernetes, for other purposes I can recommend this course[1] (authored by me).

If you're hitting the limits of Kustomize, maybe look at Tanka as well.

The Dhall Configuration Language
I think it might still have issues figuring out that it needs to apply CRDs first: https://github.com/grafana/tanka/issues/246 Besides that, I found it super-handy for deploying https://github.com/prometheus-operator/prometheus-operator and https://github.com/kubernetes-monitoring/kubernetes-mixin
I use tanka/jsonnet and cringe everytime I read a helm chart. Type safety would be nice, but the k8s api can verify the validity on the server.

Grafana Labs' Tanka is Awesome.
Interesting, I was expecting it to be AGPL like the rest of their stuff, but it's (at least currently) Apache 2
