Beginner - where to learn?
If you want more power, get https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/ . It covers a -lot- of ground and while I can't sing enough of its praises, it might still be pretty daunting.

I am wanting to learn to code a virtual instrument synthesizer, where should I start?
See if you can get Surge to compile on your machine; then try to add an oscillator and a filter.
- Good free plugins that you have found

Anyone know what this particular Synth sound is called? Or how I can recreate it? Very reminiscent of 90s hip hop
As for free options - Surge also has a 2-operator FM mode as a single oscillator.

Jazz/funk softsynth for beginner
https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/ has a ladder filter, and by following the structure of a Minimoog, you can approximate the sounds fairly closely, but that means going off the beaten path of factory presets and building your own.
Surge XT (cos everyone needs a 3 OSC hybrid synth in their life)

Get Into Music: Variety Pack Software Bundle
Surge is a versatile synth with a lot of presets that are great if you don't want to spend a lot of time engineering the sound. This is my go to synth because it has tons of options and it's easy to navigate to the different presets
- trance synth effects on linux?

Beginner looking for something to materialise with
It's not that FL is limited (of course it depends on which version you have), but did you already check out the offerings at https://www.afreestudio.com/ ? Spitfire Labs has some really nice stuff that's not mainstream, Native Instruments has lots of nice free stuff. https://vital.audio/ and https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/ are amazing and have tons of sounds - not necessarily mainstream.

What’s the name of the bass and melody instruments in “Be Alone” by Blxst?
It helps if you can tell us which plugins/synths you want to make this with. In both cases, you could start with the init patch of most synths (like Surge) and get close to the end result quickly.
