For some reason every time I enter the nether my game crashes (I have mods on with forge 1.16.5)
Okay, I took a look at it, and it seems I found what the problem is. It's a problem Sodium Reforged (SR) has, which is documented at https://github.com/Pannoniae/sodium-forge/issues/26. This is a problem with the 'lithium' part of SR and is still an open issue since the developer for SR has decided to abandon the lithium part of the mod for now. The lithium part is disabled by default in the newer versions for SR, so it would be solved if you updated the mod!

Sodium on Forge works pretty good!
Now, there are a lot of people and mods that are currently on forge, and making modpacks for forge is still a nice thing. Getting good performance on this is even better. For service-side, we have Performant on forge, which does amazing things for TPS, so servers love it. On the client side, however we don't have anything amazing, apart from this wonderful, yet little known port of Sodium, Lithium, and Phosphor for forge!

Are there any FPS mods for 1.16.5 Forge that’s not Optifine?
One that isn't listed is Sodium for Forge which includes Sodium, Lithium, and Phosphor. I don't know what issues it could cause but I'd imagine it could cause some issues here and there.

Any modpack past 1.14.4 is unplayable for me
Personally, I've been using an unofficial port of Sodium (+Lithium+Phosphor included) for Forge, downloadable from the releases page (on the right-hand sidebar) here (https://github.com/Pannoniae/sodium-forge). It's been working fine for me with no issues so far.
