Cobalt Strike Alternative?
Armitage is precursor to CS but they diverged a long time ago. I ran up the armitage that comes with Kali these days, it has issues and bugs that would prevent it being useful. Sliver is probably the most usable FOSS C2. https://github.com/BishopFox/sliver

Evaluating Security Tools
For the additional more advanced steps I used sliver as a c2. Sliver is an excellent tool for the job and unlike some other tools, it's FOSS! You can easily replace sliver with your tool of choice, however.

My own Windows 10 VM keeps killing my meterpreter connection despite no defenses active
Antivirus and reverse engineers have a harder time detecting malware in Nim and Go languages. In fact, the Sliver C2 which is written in Go (https://github.com/BishopFox/sliver) is the only C2 I know of that default payloads continue to bypass antivirus without any modification.

Thesis/Project for university
Build a C2 framework (ie. Metasploit, Cobalt Strike, sliver, etc). Seems like a really standard software security project as it encompasses a lot of interesting problems that intersects both software (building an application and interface, networking, infrastructure) and security (constructing payloads/shellcode, evasions, post-exploitation). If you've looked into a lot of drone-vulnerabilities, a C2 might be a nice place to provision exploits for them for delivery.
